Power Application: Electric Motor & Drive Testing
Electric Motor & Drive
 Application

Electric motor & drive testing and evaluation require accurate measurement and synchronization of both the electrical characteristics of the drive and motor, plus the mechanical output characteristics. Thepower analyzer must be capable of making accurate Voltage, Current and Power measurements on the highly distorted PWM waveforms from the Variable Frequency Drive.

The WT3000 Series Power Analyzers have a basic power accuracy of 0.02% of reading, and a bandwidth of DC, 0.1Hz to 1 MHz.  High-performance Digital Signal Processors, DSP's, along with a special Digital Filtering technique are used in the input measuring circuits to achieve high accuracy measurements and high speed response.   In the design of the WT3000 series, care was taken to minimize the effect of common mode noise, power line noise, and pulse noise, thus ensuring the highly accurate and stable measurements on Pulse Width Modulated, PWM, power conversion circuits.

This series of Power Analyzers are available with up to four Input Elements.  With four Input Elements, simultaneous measurements of single-phase input/three-phase output, or three-phase input/three-phase output can be made for efficiency calculations.  A typical application would be to measure the input power to an Inverter from a Fuel Cell or Battery, and the Three-Phase AC Inverter output power.  Cycle-by-Cycle measurement function measures the RMS values of Voltage, Current, Power and other parameters for each cycle during startup, load changes and other similar tests.  The Delta Calculation function allows the user to calculate individual phase voltages from the line voltage measured in a three-phase three-wire system.  This makes it possible to determine the Phase Voltage in Motors and other devices under test where a neutral line is not present.

The WT3000 can also measure the outputs from a Torque Meter and Speed Transducer.  With this, complete motor analysis can be performed, providing measurements and calculations for Speed, Torque, Motor Electrical Power, Motor Mechanical Power, Synchronous Speed, Slip, and Motor Efficiency, all in a single instrument.

While expensive luxury sedans, family minivans, and aftermarket modified vehicles often enjoy on board entertainment systems, they rarely include television or satellite broadcast systems due to the difficulty in receiving and tracking the broadcast signal while in motion.  German company FUBU, a subsidiary of Delphi Automotive, specializes in developing hybrid in-vehicle tuners and total vehicle entertainment systems.

Scope Application Pic 2
Using a maximum ratio combining (MRC) design technique, the company's products can substantially refine signals in spite of radio holes,  partial drop outs, and Doppler effects at up to 155mph.  Shown in their development lab is the "workhorse" Yokogawa DL1740 for current probing, and DL9140 for simultaneous capture and analysis of TV and CAN bus signals.  The high bandwidth of the DL9140 in combination with active probes allows accurate representation of the steepest signal slopes.  Further, with the Yokogawa DL's built-in FFT functions and "H" field probe, the designers can quickly examine and detect issues with radiated noise.

Ethernet Traffic Generation: Ethernet Stream Definition

While generating Ethernet streams for testing purposes often starts off easily, complexity quickly sets in when a user wants to generate variations in total flow based upon packet size.  In order to effectively test today's Ethernet switches, defining then just exactly how to generate traffic based upon packet size becomes cumbersome.

Switch performance often varies based upon packet size & rate, combination of packet sizes & rates, and variations in same.  Where the user wishes to test based upon changes in these variables, the calculation and set-up is often tedious and time consuming.

An Excel based software tool is now available for users of the AE5511 TTPro Ethernet tester.  As the variables are entered, the data on how to set-up each stream is determined.  A simple import of the newly determine stream definitions is all this is needed.

With it, a user can easily generate traffic that is multi-flow without the calculations of how to set up each stream of traffic.  Enter the desired rates into the Parameters box.  The tool then generates the rates for the stream generator of the AE5511. User selectable field are shown in highlight.

With this PC based tool the user can now select the flow rate per byte size.  The end result: a calculations free set-up the test tool.

Low Current Input Element for Power Analyzer WT3000
WT3000

New low current measurement capability has been added to further enhance the functionality of the WT3000 Precision Power Analyzer.  The new 2 Amp Input Element offers ranges from 5 milliamps to 2 Amps with the capability to measure as low as 50 micro amps with a basic accuracy of 0.03% of reading.

Applications for this new low current input would include measurements transformer core loss, stand-by-power, and for use with current sensors having a low milliamp per Amp output.

Cycle-by-Cycle Measurement for Power Analyzer WT3000
Cycle By Cycle List View PictureCycle-by-Cycle measurement option is now available for the WT3000 Precision Power Analyzer.  This function can measure up to 5 items of RMS Voltage, Current, Power, Phase Angle, Apparent Power, Reactive Power, Frequency, Torque, Speed and Mechanical Power.  Data can be logged for up to 3000 cycles, displayed on the screen in a time series and saved in csv format.

Typical applications for this new function would be on electrical equipment with fluctuating power such as an inverter with varying loads applied, startup or changing loads on an electric motor, UPS systems and similar product testing.

Introducing The New Battery Simulator
GS610

Yokogawa's model GS610 S31 Battery Simulator reproduces the V-I characteristics of batteries to simulate New, Defective and Low operating conditions. A uniques feature measures the V-I characteristics of batteries and then automatically creates a V-I Look-up table. When connected to the DUT, complete V-I performance curves can be generated and modified in real-time to simulate operating conditions. Output current are 3.2 Amps at 12 volts, or 2 Amps at 20 volts.

Mixed Signal Oscilloscope and Logic Analysis:  DL9710L
DL9710 Product PictureThe DL9000 SignalXplorer family expands its' size with the addition of the new DL9710 mixed signal oscilloscope.  If your work involves the use of a microcontroller, DSP, or FPGA, this may be the perfect tool for you.  The DL9710L features 32 logic input channels in addition to four analog and four real-time math channels.  The DL9710L is a next-generation MSO that can perform all the most popular measurements capabilities of a traditional logic analyzer, including state mode, custom thresholds, arbitrary grouping, complex triggering, and deep memory.  If you are working with A/D or D/A components, you will love the DL9710L's "virtual analog" channel, which lets you view an ideal analog waveform converted from any digital group.  Best of all, the DL9710L's offers a significant cost savings compared to a logic analyzer and even competitive MSOs.
