SPX™ Modules - New Low Cost Expansion Modules from VersaLogic

VersaLogic has announced the latest addition to their product line – SPX™ expansion modules. This family of low-cost I/O modules provides a new level of convenience for routine I/O expansion. The small size, low cost, and simplified system interface is possible only due to high levels of integration and miniaturization that was not available previously. Connected by a 14-pin cable to any SPX-enabled baseboard, SPX expansion modules can be mounted in any position, up to two feet from the baseboard. The small SPX modules (30.5 x 96 mm / 1.2 x 3.775") may optionally be attached to the baseboard using stand-offs. Up to four SPX modules can be daisy-chained together to meet targeted I/O requirements.

Planned SPX modules include:

• 8-channel Analog Input
• 4-channel Analog Output
• CANbus Controller
• 8-channel Solid State Switch

TOCNET™ (Tactical Operations Center Intercommunications System) Relies on VersaLogic for Ruggedized PC/104-Plus SBC

MIL-COTS requirements are among the most stringent in the embedded space. With US troops consistently in harm’s way, delivering quality COTS product is essential. The Defense & Aerospace Systems Division of Sanmina-SCI® recently developed an Intercommunications System (ICS) that is quickly becoming the de facto standard for battlefield communications. Known as the Tactical Operations Center Intercommunications System or TOCNET™, the rugged ICS equipment is designed for the harshest environments and is currently being deployed into new Marine Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. VersaLogic provides the PC/104-Plus SBC that serves as the controller board for the sophisticated TOCNET application

The PC/104-Plus product Bobcat was selected by the Sanmina R&D team because of its long-term availability and reliability. During the extensive testing phase, Sanmina subjected the Bobcat product to a battery of tests, including: Temperature soak/boot cycles (soak at -40 Deg C for 2 hours before boot); high temperature operation/thermal analysis; shock and vibration testing and a range of HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing) and HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Testing) tests. At the end of the day, Bobcat was able to successfully pass the stringent testing required for this life saving project. With the recent EOL announcement of the DiskOnChip (DOC) used on the Bobcat, Sanmina is now qualifying the newer Lynx platform and expects no hurdles in transitioning to this platform.

During the design process, several modifications to the base-board were required. A custom BIOS image with pre-defined CMOS defaults was installed, the battery was removed, and a conformal coating and wire wrapping in place of option jumpers were added. The team also added the installation of an executable file onto a Flash module, and RTV to secure some components. VersaLogic’s willingness to work closely with Sanmina designers as they identified their specific requirements, as well as the company’s commitment to long-term availability and long-term reliability, effectively helped close the deal. Overall, the project consisted of 3,200 custom Bobcat platforms worth in excess of $1.5 million.

Sean Drury of Pen-Tech Associates, VersaLogic’s Rep firm in the Southeast United States, worked diligently to secure this business. In addition, Bill Goodrich, VersaLogic Strategic Account Manager, and Adrian Frost, VersaLogic Senior Account Manager, were instrumental during this sale, meeting with the Sanmina team on multiple occasions and contributing to this outstanding design win.
