At the recent Bus and Board Conference held in Long Beach, CA Tekmicro made two signficiant product announcements. Together with partner QinetiQ RTES of the UK, Tekmicro unveiled the JazzStore SoC. It is the industry's first complete data recording solution available as a System on a Chip. Now data recording and data acquisition can be achieved in a single slot.

In conjunction with QinetiQ and Elma Bustronic, Tekmicro has also announced a new VXS, VITA 41-based mesh architecture that can deliver aggregate throughput of 112.5 GB/sec in a single chassis. The first implementation of this powerful architecture, the new Elma Bustronic 12 slot chassis using the Tekmicro/QinetiQ Callisto switch/processor card, was shown at the Bus and Board conference last week.

TEK Microsystems, Inc. of Chelmsford, MA and QinetiQ Real Time Embedded Systems (RTES) of Malvern, UK have announced their latest product developed as a result of the alliance between the companies: the JazzStore SoC. The JazzStore SoC is the first complete data recording solution available as a "System on a Chip". Configured as advanced firmware that is contained in the FPGA, the JazzStore SoC is the first product to combine data acquisition and data recording on a single board. Previous implementations required a minimum of two boards. Advanced applications such as UAVs, signals intelligence, imaging, and surveillance applications where weight, power and size are critical can immediately benefit from this System On Chip (SoC) solution.

JazzStore SoC is the latest addition to TEK Microsystems' JazzStore family of data recording systems. JazzStore SoC is available as an option on any of five different TEK Microsystems/QinetiQ RTES data acquisition or processing products. The JazzStore family includes a range of solutions from a single card to complete chassis, each configured to meet the unique needs of the application. The JazzStore family was the first to use an optimized real-time implementation of the industry standard FAT32 file system providing record and playback at 100% of the speed of the RAID bandwidth.

"JazzStore SoC is the latest product resulting from the alliance between Tekmicro and QinetiQ. At the Bus and Board conference just a year ago we announced this alliance and have already introduced several significant product advancements that have resulted from our relationship. JazzStore SoC gives developers the ability to handle the complete data acquisition and recording on a single card. For military applications where size, weight and power are at a premium this is a powerful and cost effective solution."

JazzStore SoC is available as an integrated SoC solution on the following board level products:

Neptune: Dual-channel 2 GSPS data acquisition
Venus: Five channel 105 MSPS data acquisition
Triton: 2 GSPS data acquisition with 2 GSPS digital waveform generation
Callisto: FPGA processor VXS board (5 Virtex II Pro 50) with 12 channel high-speed digital I/O ports
JazzFiber: Four channel fiber optic PMC module

New VXS Processor Mesh Architecture

TEK Microsystems, Inc. of Chelmsford, MA, Elma Bustronic of Fremont CA, and QinetiQ Real Time Embedded Systems (RTES) of Malvern, UK have announced a new VXS, VITA 41-based mesh architecture. The VXS Processor Mesh architecture will be proposed to VITA (VME International Trade Association) by the Companies as a new standard to define alternative backplane topologies for VXS. The VXS Processor Mesh is a powerful architecture with bandwidth that can deliver 112.5 GB/s of aggregate throughput within the processing mesh in a single chassis. This is a throughput improvement of 6x over currently available technology.

Elma Bustronic has also announced the industry's first 12 slot chassis to implement the VXS Processor Mesh. Developed in collaboration with TEK Microsystems, Inc, and QinetiQ RTES, this hybrid backplane implements two VME64x slots, three VME64x / VXS payload slots, and six VXS switch slots. Each switch slot implements twenty x 4 links for a total of 25 GB/s per switch slot. The system architecture supports up to 7.5 GB/s of throughput between the I/O front end and the processing mesh and a total of 112.5 GB/s of aggregate throughput within the processing mesh itself.

"The VXS switch / processor mesh architecture clearly demonstrates both the longevity and expandability of the VME platform for high performance embedded computing. In one system, a user could simultaneously use four stages of interconnect evolution: VME64, RACE++, VXS payload and VXS switch cards," comments Andy Reddig, president and CTO of TEK Microsystems, Inc. "With such a wide range of performance, VXS offers the user a unique combination of leading edge performance without compromising existing hardware and software investments or the ability to deploy incremental upgrades."

By comparison VITA 46.3 Serial RapidIO mesh slot supports four x4 links for a total of 5 GB/s per slot and an AdvancedTCA full mesh slot supports fifteen x4 links for a total of 18.75 GB/s per slot. Data intensive applications such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can utilize the additional bandwidth provided by the new VXS Processor Mesh architecture to scale to higher number of channels, higher bandwidth, or both.

Neptune VXS-1 Chosen by EDN as Top 100 HOT Product

It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it. Every year, EDN's editors receive thousands of product announcements, and it's their job to narrow these thousands of choices into the hundreds of newsworthy items that each year grace the pages of EDN. At the end of 2005 the editors further narrowed down these selections to EDN's hot 100 products of 2005. The Neptune VXS-1 has been chosen part of that exclusive list of products.
